Burns Night
When England, England becomes Scotland, Scotland!

Address To a Haggis
Fair fa’ your honest,
sonsie face,
Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o’ a grace
As lang’s my arm.
(Robert Burns)

On Friday, January 23rd, at 7.45 pm we will once again be commemorating the birthday of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns with a traditional Burns Supper.
If you’ve never tried real haggis with neeps and tatties, or if you’d like to experience the great man’s poetry read out to you by two lovely Scots and listen to a piper working the magic of the bagpipes while you sip on a fine Scotch whisky, then don’t miss this event.
(As an option, we will be serving vegetarian haggis too, of course.)

Tickets cost 28 Euros (including a home-cooked, three-course meal and a glass of Scotch)
and can be bought until Wednesday,
21st January, 3pm in the shoppe.
There are only 15 available, so hurry down!

In collaboration with the
Deutsch-Britische-Gesellschaft Dresden e.V.,
sponsor of the bagpipers!

Featuring the diaries of James Folan and Laura Park

Why do people write diaries?
The world’s great diary writers have left invaluable chronicles of important historical events and periods. In addition, research has shown that writing down your thoughts and emotions is accompanied by considerable health benefits.
But should all of diaries be made available to the public? Would it not be better if some of our scribblings were not kept for posterity, but consigned instead to the forces of biological degradation or fire? Let us help you make up your mind by sharing a few of our diary entries with you.
We don’t give eyewitness accounts of the Great Fire or the Restoration, as the great diarist Samuel Pepys did, but we can offer a wealth of insight into life in England in the mid-to-late 70s. Exciting topics include:
• minute temperature fluctuations
• TV schedules
• football results
• meals
You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You may even be slightly bored.

James Folan is an actor and translator who has just realised how dull his Derbyshire childhood was.
Laura Park writes occasionally, and is now on the verge of destroying her teenage diaries.

8.15pm at England, England

Those of you who read “The Secret History”, published in the early 90’s by an 28-year-young Donna Tartt, will already be in awe of this writer with her intimidating flawless prose (quite similar to the flawlessness of the haircut, if you excuse my clumsy comparison here). As it is always difficult to write something about a book I haven’t read, I will just recommend reading “The Goldfinch” on my very subjective evaluation outlined above. Enjoy.

Join the book club anytime (you don’t need to sign anywhere, not to worry!), we are always glad to make new acquaintances & you can buy the book in the shoppe with a 10% discount!
