Frances Hodgson Burnett “The Secret Garden”
This is more of an obvious choice, trying to pick a book that will somehow relate to having the book club in a garden. Stephanie is throwing a party at her beautiful old home in Meißen. Other than The Secret Garden being a Children’s Classic, I don’t know much about it, so let’s just see.

My superficial prejudice against Cloud Atlas (never read it, just saw the trailer), prevented me from picking up any book by David Mitchell – up till now. Oh boy, one of the good things about this book club is the chance to be put right about certain no-goes in your life and now I’m on page 83 I’m completely swept over and converted. Yes to David Mitchell and his, as the Guardian put it, delicious prose!
The story (semi-autobiographical), takes us into the fantastic world of thirteen-year-old Jason, who’s desperately trying to hide that he is a stutterer. But it’s also a brilliant study of Britain in the 1980s and and and – just read it!

THE GREAT PARK plays an acoustic concert in the truly lovely England England in beautiful Dresden.

It’s disturbing reading A.L. Kennedy, but then brilliant and clear. The stories in Original Bliss are concerned, appropriately, with the complexities of sex and the lack of it. Whether in Copenhagen or New York City, in the close confines of a TV wardrobe department or in weightless outer space, A.L.Kennedy’s characters are engaged in possibly fruitless attempts to close down emotional distances and fill a physical void.

Rowan Coupland is a writer, singer and multi instrumentalist, playing ‘thoroughly beguiling neo folk’ (Time Out London) combining soaring vocals, and astonishingly intricate guitar and harp arrangements, as well as playing clarinet, accordion, piano, organ, violin, glockenspiel and more on his masterful studio records- the last of which was named album of the year, 2012 by Brighton Music Blog.
